Now in Vienna the air of Spring hovers overy the city. They sky is blue and the sun is shining in splendor. Some plants cannot help but grow already. In some flower beds the remains from the past growth cycle were cut down in order to prepare them for the approaching blossoming. Let’s grow!
今、ウイーンの街には春の気配が漂っています。空は碧く、日の光が輝かしいです。気の早い花はもう咲いています。街角の花壇は、前のサイクルの残りが刈られ、新しい芽がふく準備が整いました。さあ、出るぞ！

At a supermarket in Vienna I found a beer refrigerator with giant beer cans inside displaying Falco’s face! Falco is a world-famous Austrian pop musician. I think his most famous song is “Rock me Amadeus”. Sadly he suddenly passed away in 1998. Back then in Austria there was deep mourning and I understood how much he was loved by the people here and how proud Austrians were of him. A Vienna native, his face decorates the cans of the well-known Viennese beer brand Ottakringer.
ウイーンの或るスーパーマーケットで、ファルコの顔写真の付いた大きなビール缶で満たされた冷蔵庫を見ました！ファルコは世界的に有名なオーストリアのポップミュージシャンです。彼の一番よく知られた曲は「ロック ミー アマデウス」だと思います。残念なことに、1998年に突然亡くなりました。その時、オーストリアは深い悲しみに沈み、如何に彼が人々から愛され、誇りの存在であったか、私は身に沁みて感じるようでした。このウイーンっ子が、同じくウイーンの有名なビール製造会社「オッタクリンガー」の缶を飾るのも頷けます。

Today the weather in Vienna was quite nice. Even though the temperature was not very high, the sunlight has a little more power now. Under the sun’s light young green radiates beautifully.
Today is “Faschingsdienstag” (Tuesday marking the end of carnival season). In front of a primary school I saw some children dressed up in costumes running around and joking around with one another. They looked so innocent and especially now I feel it is very precious and important.
My husband and I bought a “Vanillekrapfen” from a bakery (kind of like a doughnut filled with Vanilla cream), which is a specialty for Fasching (carnival season). At home we both ate this ありました。nKrapfen together with hot tea. It should be normal to enjoy it in tranquility but sadly I have seen that such normality can not always exist. When I think about that, this sweet delicacy tasted a little bitter but I thought that I should be grateful for that moment.
今日のウイーンはとても良いお天気に恵まれました。気温はまだそんなに高くないのですが、日差しが少し力を増してきたようです。陽光の中で新緑が美しく輝いていました。
今日は「謝肉祭の火曜日」。小学校の前では、数人の仮装した子供たちが走り回ったり、戯れあったりしていました。この子達の無邪気さが、今の私には、特に大切で尊いことのように思われました。
パン屋さんで、夫と私は「ヴァニラクラプヒェン」という、謝肉祭期間中よく出回る、ヴァニラクリーム入りの丸いドーナツのような揚げ菓子を一つ買いました。自宅で熱いお茶を飲みながら、これを夫と分け合っていただきました。このような楽しみは平常であるはずですが、残念ながら、いつもそうであるとは限らないのですね。そう思うと、甘いお菓子もなんだか苦いように感じましたが、このひとときに感謝したいという気持ちになりました。

An ice cream shop, which was closed for Winter break is open again. This year’s February was uncommonly mild and so I can understand that this ice cream shop has opened again. Nevertheless today’s maximum temperature was around 8 degrees. I find it to be a little too cold to be eating ice cream outside but many people buy cups and cones to go.
冬休みをしていたアイスクリーム屋さんがまた開きました。この2月は異常に暖かかったので、早くもお店を開けたことが理解できます。しかし、今日の最高気温は摂氏8度。戸外でアイスクリームを食べるのはちょっと寒いように思います。それでも、たくさんの人がテイクアウトしていました。

“It smells!”. As usual, my husband and I take walks to Joe sama (Haydn statue in front of Mariahilfer Church), when we get close recently often there is a strong smell of garlic in the air. Then we know that Langos mobile cart is there in front of Mariahilfer Church. Langos is deep fried bread dough and people say it is from Hungary. Here in Vienna it is typical Christmas market special food and very popular. Mostly it has a round shape but there are other variations such as elongated with sausage or cheese inside. There is the option of having garlic butter put on it. Every year at Christmas markets we eat it at least once and that is a kind of year-closing ritual for us.
But two years in a row this culinary ritual was somewhat disrupted. That is due to the Covid pandemic. Christmas 2020 there was no chance at all because all Christmas markets were not even allowed to open. Christmas time 2021 there were still high infection numbers and there was severely limited business activity at Christmas markets. Maybe because of that in front of Mariahilfer Church there is often a mobile Langos stand even after Christmas and now it is still operating. We tried Langos from this stand several times. It is thick and fluffy. Since it is so large we always share one and we likt it very much! There is also often a Burger stand and one with potato specialties at this location.
「匂いがする！」いつも、夫と私はジョー様（マリアヒルフ教会前のハイドン像のこと）を目がけて散歩をするのですが、このごろ、近づくにつれにんにくの匂いが漂ってくることがよくあります。マリアヒルフ教会の前にランゴーシュの屋台が出ているのです。ランゴーシュは揚げパンのようなもので、ハンガリーから来た、と聞きました。ウイーンではよく知られたクリスマス市の食べ物で、大変人気があります。円形や、ソーセージやチーズの入った長い形状のものがあり、好みでにんにくバターを塗ってもらえます。毎年、まるで1年を終える儀式であるかのように、私達はクリスマス市でこれを食べます。
しかし、2年ほど、このクリスマス期間中の食の儀式は障害に見舞われました。コロナパンデミックのせいです。2020年はクリスマス市は行われませんでしたし、去年も、罹患者数が多かったので、制限された開催でした。そのためか、マリアヒルフ教会前に、昨年末からクリスマスの期間を過ぎてもランゴーシュの屋台が時々出るようになり、今に至っています。私達もこの屋台で何度か買って食べました。厚くて、もちもちした食感です。大きいので、私達は二人で分け合って食べますが、とても美味しいです。ここにはよく、他にハンバーガーや、フライドポテトなどの屋台も出ています。

I started living in Vienna over 30 years ago. Back then everything was fresh, foreign and yes, to me it was a new world. Out of that especially surprising was men helping women put on their coats. Normally in Japan women (mostly wives) assist men in putting on their coats. I knew of course that in Europe there was “Ladies first” but I did not know about the coat custom. Helping women put on their coats was something even younger men and even teenagers did. They said they had been raised by their parents to this custom as politeness. This custom I actually enjoyed and for me that was rather polite and noble. Back then there were more mature men who when greeting were holding women’s hands and pretending to kiss the back of their hands saying “Küss die Ha～nd” (old galant Viennese pronounciation with a melodic elongation of the word hand). When that first happened to me, I did not understand what that man was doing and I was very surprised. But I quickly got used to it and understood that it was a very polite and galant custom.
Time passes and sadly the custom “Küss die Hand” has become almost extinct with now mostly quite old gentlemen doing it. In my generation almost nobody does it and if young men do it to young women it might even be interpreted as a kind of sexual harrassment nowadays. The custom of men helping women with their coats still exists but I heard some young women decline that offer. Personally I think all people are equal, men and women alike. I am saddened by still existing discrimination against women and I would like to fight against that. Nevertheless a little “galantry” gives me a good feeling. I feel that some galantry and courting in the right amount is appealing and showing respect towards women. I think it would be a pity if those old fashioned galant customs were to disappear…
私は30年以上前からウイーンに住んでいます。住み始めた頃、全てが新鮮で不慣れで、まさに新世界といった感じでした。なかでも驚いたのは、男性が女性にコートを着せかけることです。日本では女性（奥さん）が男性に着せかけるのが通常ですよね。もちろん、私は西洋は「レイディーズ ファースト」であることは聞いていました。しかし、このコートの習慣は知らなかったのです。これは、若い男性でも、10代であってもする習慣で、皆、親から礼儀のひとつとして躾けられるのだと言います。私としてはこの習慣は心地よく、礼儀正しく、高貴な感じを受けます。他には、熟年男性が、女性の手の甲に口づけするふりをしながら、「キュス ディ ハ～ント（御手に接吻を、といった意味で、”Hand（手）”の”a（ア）”をウイーン風の独特の抑揚で伸ばす）という習慣もあります。初めてこれを体験した時、私は一体何をしているのか分からず、驚いたものです。しかし、すぐに慣れて、非常に礼儀正しい、騎士的な行いなのだと理解しました。
時が経ち、「キュス ディ ハント」をするのは、年配の男性だけで、ほとんど消えつつある習慣になっているようです。私の年代の男性でこのようなことをする人はほぼ皆無ですし、若い人同士では、女性からセクハラととられるかもしれません。コートを着せかける習慣は未だ根強いですが、若い女性のなかには、断る人もいるそうです。私としては、全ての人間は同じで、男女も平等であるべきと思っています。女性に対する差別や蔑視などに対抗して、毅然とした姿勢をとるように心がけたいです。しかしながら、微量の、女性に対する紳士的丁重さを受けるのは心地良く感じます。私は、適量の騎士のような振る舞いやご機嫌とりは、喜ばしいもので、女性に対する敬意の表れと受け取りたいです。このような習慣が消えてしまうのは残念な気がします。
