In the famous shopping street Mariahilfer Strasse, there is a building construction site already going on for many years. This used to be the Austrian furniture department store „Leiner“. I had no need for buying a kitchen, sofa or things like that but I often bought small items like vases, porcelain, decorative items, etc. This place was quite big and calm and just walking around browsing gave me a lot of joy. It used to be a kind of healing place for me at Mariahilfer Strasse. But it was decided to remove this building. Except this one facade in the photo because this part of the bulding has historic significance. Therefore only this part is left standing while everything else was demolished. For me as a Japanese that is very interesting, because with Japanese construction it is not possible to leave just one specific part intact. Here in Europe, one can sometimes see the method of leaving one part of a building and adding new construction to it. To me that is so rare, interesting and fascinating.
By the way, there should already be a finished new building but for several reasons it had to be demolished again and started anew. Therefore the duration of construction is very long. I do not want to go into the reasons for the delay because it will be a very long story. All I can say is that I miss Leiner.
ウィーンの買い物で有名なマリアヒルフ通りに、ここ数年来、建物の跡地が存在しています。ここにはオーストリアの家具、家庭用品のデパート「ライナー」がありました。私は台所やソファー等の家具が必要であったことはありませんが、花瓶、食器、室内用の小さな飾り等をしばしばここで買いました。お店の中は広くて落ち着いていて、品物を見て歩くだけで楽しかったです。さながらマリアヒルフ通りの癒しの場のようでした。しかし、ここは別の用途のため建て替えられることになったのです。この写真の外壁を除いては。なんでもこの部分は歴史的に価値があるからなのだそうです。そのため、この部分を残し、その他を全て取り払ってしまいました。日本で生まれ育った私には大変珍しいことに思えます。日本の家屋では、外壁の一部分だけ残す等ということはほぼないからです。ヨーロッパではよくこのように建物の外壁を残して建て替えることがあります。それを見かけると、私は珍しく興味深く感じます。
ところで、ここに予定されていた建物はとっくに完成しているはずですが、いろんな事情からまだまだです。ほとんど完成していたのに、それを全て壊してまた建て始めたからです。話が長くなるので、ここには詳しいことは書きません。ただただ私は「ライナー」を懐かしく思います。
