After quite a long time my husband and I visited Vienna’s Westbahnhof. During lockdown many shops are closed but we thought we should do some exercise for our health. It is already quite cold and Westbahnhof has a large indor area for some window shopping. Also my husband likes trains and we wanted to have some hot coffee while looking at trains. There were hardly any people on the platforms. We were not afraid of Covid but the wind was very strong and cold. That’s why, after some time, we went back into the station. Because of lockdown there are fewer people around but nevertheless the station was decorated for Christrmas season. We took some pictures and then returned home. Outside the wind had grown even stronger and felt really cold. Because of the wind strength I was almost blown away. A person on a bicycle at a pedestrian crossing even fell over because of it. Fortunately some people hepled that person get back up. It is said there exists now a new variant called “omicron”, which is quite uncertain and sounds somewhat eerie. Almost as though the weather too wanted to intimidate us…

　久しぶりに夫と私はウイーン西駅に行きました。ロックダウンのせいでたくさんのお店は閉まっていますが、健康の為動かなければと思いました。もう随分寒いのですが、西駅には屋内のスペースが大きく、ウインドウショッピングができるのです。また、夫は汽車が大好きなので、熱いコーヒーを買って飲みながら車両を眺めました。プラットフォームに人はほとんどいませんでした。ですから感染の心配はないのですが、風がものすごく強くて寒かったです。それで、すぐにすごすごと駅の屋内に引き返しました。構内は、ロックダウンで人が少ないとはいえ、クリスマスの飾りが施されています。私達はそれをいくつか写真に収めた後、帰路につきました。

　外は　風が更に強さを増し、すごく寒く感じました。私は強風に煽られ、吹き飛ばされそうになったほどです。横断歩道を渡っていた自転車が風で転倒し、他の人が助け起こしてあげていました。コロナの新しい変異である「オミクロン」が広がりつつあるとのこと。不安だし、名前も不気味な響きに感じます。お天気までもが私達を脅かしているようです。

It can be felt that Winter really has arrived. This past Friday when I woke up it was snowing for the first time this season in Vienna. In the morning it was snowing heavily but in the afternoon it diminished and in the evening there was no snow on the street. But since that day every time I wake up I see something white on the opposite roof. Maybe because of the lockdown it is very quiet now and very few people are out on the street. When I took those pictures my hands got really cold and I felt my fingers freeze. I immediately had to put on gloves, which was the first time this season. I felt that Winter had also somehow crept into my body. It seems that only the christmas street lights provide warmth to me…

　冬の到来を感じるこの頃。先週の金曜日は、初雪が降りました。午前中降りしきっていた雪は、だんだんその勢いを弱め、夜には通りが濡れただけの状態になっていました。それ以来、毎朝起きると、向かいの家の屋根がうっすら白くなっています。ロックダウンのせいか、辺りは静まり返って、通りを行く人も少ないです。街の写真を撮っている最中、手がとても寒くなって、指がかじかんできました。私は慌てて手袋を付けました。この冬初めての着用です。まるで私の体の内まで、冬が入ってきたかのように感じました。街のクリスマスのための灯りが、私を暖めてくれているようです。

Due to rising numbers of Covid-19 infections, Austria has again implemented a full lockdown. The pictures above were taken in Vienna. Today was Tuesday and even though it was about 16:30 PM there were not many people out on the street. Food places radiated light but inside there were no customers. Only take out is allowed at this time.

　コロナ患者が著しく増加しているため、オーストリアではまた、ロックダウンが実施されています。上の写真は、今日のウイーン市です。火曜日で、まだ午後4時半ごろというのに、道行く人はまばらです。飲食店は明るい光を放っていますが、中にお客さんはいません。テイクアウトのみが許されています。

Austria is officially a Catholic country and therefore Christmas is very important. The sun sets quite early and the days are quite dark now. Beautiful Christmas illuminations soothe our souls.　

オーストリアはカトリックの国ですから、クリスマスはとても重要です。日が暮れるのが早くなって、暗い毎日。美しいクリスマスの光の装飾が、私たちの心を慰めてくれます。

In the top tight area of the picture you can see the illuminated art installation at Stephansdom. It is called “Himmelsleiter” (Ladder to Heaven). Since the sun is setting much earlier each day, this installation is now more clearly visible. This installation has been conceived with a religious meaning in mind. Christmas time will begin soon and I find it to be quite suitable.

　上の写真の、シュテファン寺院に設置された光の芸術作品をご覧ください。「天国への梯子」と言うそうです。日が暮れるのが早くなったので、よく目に入るようになりました。宗教的意味のある芸術作品のようです。クリスマスも近くなってきましたし、とても調和しているように思います。

Today is the 31st of October. The last day of October and this year it is a Sunday. Last night Summer time ended and like having lost one hour, all the clocks must be set back one hour. Even though it is only one hour difference, every year it feels a bit unusual and like jetlag.

Tomorrow, November 1st, is a public holiday in Austria and that means it is an extended weekend. That is why yesterday before the shops closed at 6 PM I went to buy some groceries. It was already getting dark, how fast the sun sets! This year, also because of Coronavirus, outside seating is permitted even during Winter. Since it has gotten cooler, many places use infrared lamps for the seats outside. Seeing the red light in the dusk and people sitting outside, it somehow reminded me of a city in Italy. Also some ice cream shops change into a clothing shop during the Winter and I have already seen that transformation. Maybe like myself many people wanted to do some shopping and there were many people out and about. It was already somewhat cool but because of lively atmosphere my heart felt like being warmed by those infrared lamps as well.

　今日は10月31日。10月最後の日で、今年は日曜日です。昨日から今日に変わってすぐの夜中にサマータイムが終わりました。時計の針を1時間戻さねばなりません。たった1時間なのに、毎年時差ボケのような感覚がします。

　明日、11月1日はここオーストリアは祭日なので、長いウイークエンドです。ですから昨日は、夕方6時にお店が閉まってしまう前に、急いで食糧品を買いに出かけました。もうすでに薄暗く、なんて日が沈むのが早くなったことでしょう！この冬は、コロナのことがあって、飲食店は戸外の席でのサーヴィスが許されています。もう随分寒いので、これらの席には赤外線ランプで暖房を施しているところがあります。夕暮れに戸外で席をとっている人々を灯し出す赤い光を見ると、まるでイタリアの街のようだと思います。アイスクリーム屋さんの中には、冬季だけ衣料品を売る店に変わるところもあるのですが、もう、この変身をしているのを目にしました。私と同じように、たくさんの人が買い物などのために通りに繰り出していました。寒くて暗いけれども、活力に満ちた雰囲気に、私の心も赤外線ランプで暖かく照らされたように感じました。

Here in Vienna there is continuously stable Autumn weather now. Thick and warm coats are not yet necessary but one should nevertheless dress according to the season. Leaves are falling and ivy becomes ever more red. My favourite pasttime of collecting fallen chestnuts has come to an end. Under chestnut trees I cannot find any more fallen ones. Autumn in Vienna is progressing in a tranquil and tender fashion… ここウイーンでは、安定した秋らしいお天気が続いています。厚いコートはまだ必要ありませんが、充分暖かく着込んで出掛けなければいけません。木々は葉を次々に落とし、蔦は紅く染まっていきます。私の大好きなカスタニエの実を拾うことも、もう終わりです。カスタニエの木の下に一つたりとも実を見つけることができません。ウイーンの秋は静かに、しかし確かに深まりつつあります。
